Run Lab Couch to 5K: Train for the Ventura Turkey Trot 2026

This fall, Rise Run Lab is teaming up with run coach Michelle Martinez to offer a dedicated training cohort for patients referred by Dr. Rosenberg, designed to make this journey feel supported every step of the way, no matter where they're starting from.

Here is what's included:

•  Community, not just a program. Train alongside others who have walked a similar health journey. There is real power in showing up next to people who get it.

•  An early meet-up before training begins. Get to know Michelle and the group ahead of week one, ask questions, voice any concerns, and start the program feeling confident and prepared.

•  Physical therapy expertise on your team. Direct access to our PT staff for anything running-related, from form questions to nagging aches patients aren't sure about.

•  Priority scheduling if something comes up. If an injury or issue arises during training, it moves patients to the front of the line so small problems don't derail their progress.

Whether the goal is to walk, jog, or run the full 5K, this program meets patients where they are and gets them to that starting line ready. A link to sign up will be provided soon, and we will make sure your office has it as well so it's easy to share with your patients.

Why Movement Matters for Cancer Survivors and Fighters

•  Heart protection during and after chemotherapy. Cardiotoxicity is one of the most common side effects of chemotherapy drugs such as anthracyclines. Research, including the BREXIT trial, has shown that structured exercise during treatment can help preserve heart function, improve cardiac output, and protect against the functional decline these medications can cause.

•  Lower risk of recurrence. Large studies in breast and colon cancer survivors have found that meeting regular exercise guidelines is associated with meaningfully lower rates of cancer recurrence and improved long term survival, with some structured programs showing recurrence risk reduced by roughly a quarter or more.

•  Reduced treatment side effects. Regular movement has been linked to lower rates of treatment related complications and toxicity, along with better maintenance of strength, bone density, and cardiovascular fitness throughout treatment.

•  Mental health and quality of life. Group exercise consistently improves mood, lowers stress and fear of recurrence, and improves overall quality of life for people living with and beyond cancer. There is real power in training alongside others who understand the road you are on.

•  Community and accountability. Our cohort model means no one trains alone. Participants build relationships with coaches, clinicians, and fellow survivors that boost both physical and mental health.
